Email Marketing Tips
Source: Effective E-Mail Marketing by Herschell Gordon Lewis

-Use double opt-in email services like Aweber etc with opt out instructions
-Promise a niche benefit in subject line and deliver in first 2 lines
-remember online attention span is short
-short paragraphs and informal style “use can’t instead of can not”
-outline what they can expect – tell them what topic will be covered, cover the topics in the body, and then summarize what you just told them in the body at the conclusion
-rapport is the magic ingredient and needs conversational tone
-send an occasional thank you email with no commercial overtone
-send messages relevant to your niche and be to the point
-use only one exclamation point
-use dashes as they have more impact than “…”
-don’t use * because there is a perception that it indicates something is not totally true
-be clear and compelling – get to the point FAST
-emotion outputs intellect
-a call to action is imperative
-use their name and date in subject line to increase open rates
-the from line should say your name
-use words like visit, walk, run, go, get to, meander, head over, drop in, hurry to, zip over,
-use imperative language that tells them what to do “do xyz and see results” instead of “successful women usually do xyz to see results”
-use provocative questions in subject line here and ther
-hard motivators: fear, exclusivity, greed, guilt, need for approval
-soft motivators: convenience and pleasure
-successful messages blend benefit, rapport and appearance of truth
-“private, free, congrats, nuts!, uh-oh, blah, alert, quick” are good words that can intrigue people to open your email
-Use bullet points to prevent boredom – staccato style
-Usually best days to email are Tues-Thurs but this needs to be tested out with your market

Marlo,

Thanks for sharing this list of ideas. I love concise lists that get straight to the point and full of "meaty" information and ideas!
