As I was checking my website statistics last night, I was wondering about you all here: How important is it to you to keep track of your website statistics? What kind of software / or service do you use? And where does most of your traffic come from?

I've used the free ones from Statcounter.com and also Counters.cc ;however, they're limited on the free versions anyway. I've recently started using the one in my cpanel from my hosting company. Which I like because I can get statistic on all my subdomains as well.

For me, it's not just about numbers, but about where my traffic is coming from. The keywords that bring in my visitors are some indication as to whether the right kind of visitors are coming in. Of course, I have to laugh sometimes at some of the keywords that the search engines pick up from my sites. I'm thinking, "What in the world is that content doing on my site?" But, I guess it's random words that are picked up from the search engines, thus, leading in some strangers that are probably wondering how they got there as well.

Most of my traffic comes from the search engines, articles that I've written, or from occasional directory listings.

Please share with us here about your 'Website Traffic" life.

Good question.

I think the web stats in my case are important to see what people are looking for when they find me and to make sure i remain fresh in those areas. I do not rely on web traffic for my business but it is good to keep my name out there.

I use my hosts traffic counter on my cpanel as well i think it is a good tool to use.

Joyfully,

I used FreeAdStats to track my traffic and to see what people are clicking on and I think it's important to see where they are coming from so you can continue to use those methods that are effective for you. Since I re-did my site, I now use the web stats in my cpanel...it sure takes a little bit of getting used to.

My traffic comes from search engines and other forums.

I agree that it takes getting use to. Sometimes I like the the simplicity of the hosted counters better, but yet, the cpanel statistics offers some great details.

to keep track of your website stats for several reasons.
A. You know folks are visiting your website
B. You know when to make any necessary changes and updates to your website if needed
C. If your Numbers are low & your stats are low, then you may need to work on markieting your website more!!
I had a website in the past for Home & Garden Party & will have one again very shortly as Home & Garden Party is making some changes- as of August 1st, 2007.

I view my stats quite often. If I run a promotion then I view it with a fine tooth comb...I use google analytics. I am quite happy with this.

I use asp.net's stats software as my husband designed my site in asp.net and this is the hosting we use too. I probably view my stats maybe once per month. I am most interested in where the traffic is coming from - what URL, and also the landing page they come to etc. A lot comes from my small business moms' blog which is great because then I know it is quite targeted.

I would much rather have less traffic that is highly targeted as opposed to tons of 'accidental' traffic. I like to see how long people stick around my site as well and what the most common exit page is.
