Mon Nov 06, 2006 1:25 pm   I'm Officially Settled in Kansas

Hello everyone,

I'm delighted to be back. I can tell you that it was an exhausting experience, but I'm glad to be settled in. I still have a few things to unpack and organize, but my kitchen is ready to go, so our stomachs will at least be filled.

I love our new Church and the town here is very small compared to Oklahoma City, but I enjoy the quiet atmosphere and the slower pace. I am now a pioneer woman (hee! hee!) We don't get any free tv channels here (except one occasionally comes in when my hubby tries to watch the news), my dishwasher was left behind (I'm the new official dishwasher), my bathtub was left behind (just a shower here), No Christian school (I'm the new teacher -- we're homeschooling starting today).

Pray that our house in Oklahoma is sold quickly. My husband and I will be looking for our "dream home" to grow old in (but we'll be taking our time to look). Right now we're living in one of his dad's rental houses, which is very small -- but I like the cozy atmosphere. I know God has something special for us.

Well, I want to get some networking activities going here in our forums. I have invited a friend from another network of mine to join us. She will hopefully be joining us very soon. I believe she will be a blessing to us all.

Please take time this week to invite a friend to join us here. I believe we can grow an active network if we put our efforts together.

I'm getting ready to start school, so I'll be checking in a little later.

Have a great day everyone,

Rhonda

I'm so happy for you Rhonda.
You are much better at moving then I am if you have all that together already.
God bless you in your homeschooling. It's a great opportunity and I'm sure you will do well and love it.
If I can be of any help, let me know. It's good to have you back.

Thanks everyone. I am really enjoying the change...and fall is such a beautiful time of the year. There are so many trees here.

Homeschool went fine today. This is my first time to actually teach all three of my boys, so I was trying to adjust to rotating between grades and lessons. I love being able to stay home and not have to get out in the cold morning air to take them to school :D My middle son is quite the challenge though. He has never liked school, and reading is a big challenge for him...which is probably why he doesn't like school to begin with.

Have any of you had a challenge with your children learning to read?

Rhonda,
I'm not sure how old your young man is but I've heard of many that just want to do other things right now but they eventually get around to reading. I don't have any boys but I had one child that was dsylexic and one that just didn't seem to understand about putting the sounds together. The harder I tried with the dsylexic girl the less she was able to learn. We stopped "lessons" and I would just mark the Scriptures we read with the long and short sounds, and we would give her very short verses to read. NO pushing or requiring. It took her a LONG time but not as long as I was afraid it might since I had stopped "teaching" her! And without any further help all of a sudden she was reading - and very well. She was probably 10 though. But honestly, I didn't think it would ever happen and I didn't really think she would ever read well.
The second one I stopped "lessons" since they were a source of frustration and she was reading perfectly by the age of 7. I honestly can not say how she knows the sounds since we stopped all that. But she reads quite well also and is now 8.
The other 2, one learned "normally" and the other loved to read so much and had such a high desire that I taught her about 8 sounds and when it was her tape choice night she wanted to listen to the phonics tape and I never taught her any more and she has read fluently since she was 4.
So go figure and certainly don't worry and my best recommendation is don't push. It seems to magically happen.
Or maybe it's just the Lord! :D

Cynthia,

That sounds like great advice. The school he was in is a very fine school, but the curriculum really was too fast paced and frustrated him alot. The curriculum that I use now is suppose to be easier, but I can see that I'm going to have to really work on not pushing him and letting him try to get the concepts at his own pace. He is 8 and will be 9 this month on the 22nd. He seems to be trying a little harder this year, but still holding back.

Thanks again Cynthia for taking time to write. I'll try another day...and try to relax. :?

Thanks, Sandy.

I'm finding that I really like homeschooling as well, although, I know there will be those frustrating days at times.

I visited your blog this morning. (At least I believe it was your blog??) I really like it. Can you post the link? -- I failed to bookmark it.

Sound like you are all moved. Have i been gone that long?

Glad to see you survived the process.

Well done!

Sounds like you have accomplished a lot in a short time.

So glad to hear that God has prepared your heart for the move. To adjust to changes like no dishwasher or bathub and the challenges of home schooling. Sounds like you are able to accept these with grace abounding.

Every child is different in every way, enjoy the uniqueness of each one. Perhaps if reading is a challenge the assignments could be presented in a style that is more adaptable to your childs keen interest and giftedness.

My oldest was not a reader, the only way we could develop this skill was through focusing on her areas of strengths. These strengths then enabled her to develope her skill of reading.

I trust you can undertand my babble :?
Best to say, all will be well. Enjoy the time and await the reward no matter how long it takes.
B.

Carla,

Yes, I've made a big move. I'm happier than ever. It was a fast event, so no, you haven't been away too long. I appreciate your participating here at the forums.

Breezy,

I understand your "babble" completely. And I sincerely appreciate all the advice you ladies are sharing.

Sandy,

Yes, I'm sure it was your blog. It's just that I was questioning myself a bit because I had not heard you mention it before. Way to go on blogging! I just started blogging recently. I thought it really wasn't my "thing" at first, but now I'm actually setting up a new blog for wahm-announce that I hope to launch very soon.

Rhonda, you certainly have done a much better job of settling in than I have. We still have a lot of unpacking still to do and trying to find where to put things but love our new home. We are so happy since we are back here even with all the stuff that has happened and the heatlh challenges that my hubby and daughter-in-law have been going through.

We have gotten back into our old Messianic Congregation. There have been many changes there and it has grown tremendously since we left. We have also visited the old church that we went to and seen several of our friends. There has been numerous changes in the church as well so alot of the people that we knew are no longer there.

Yesterday Fred decided that he wanted to get Chinese food to take home and I decided that I wanted to stop in at Tuesday morning (it is in the same shopping center). Normally, we would have gone and ordered the Chinese first but I decided that I wanted to go into Tuesday morning first. When we got into the SUV, Fred said to me, isn't that Caroline there, and I looked and said I think so but no sure and decided to call her name when he said the same thing. I did and sure enough it was. She looks over and goes "Oh my G-d" and came running over. We hadn't seen her in 12 years and stood there about a hour talking. It was great.

Have you had any offers on your home selling? We also still have our home in Arizona and sure hope that it sells some. Until it does, we have a double mortgage and this one here is very high until I can refinance after the other house sells.

Jo
Send a greeting today!
